MIT Lincoln Laboratory is a federally funded research and development center that applies advanced technology to problems of national security. Research and development activities focus on long-term technology development as well as rapid system prototyping and demonstration. The laboratory has a single SMT line building assemblies in very small batches of typically less than four pieces each.
The prototyping process involves many revisions, in which all activities, defects and actions taken are recorded for traceability purposes. Currently, this recording is paper-based and performed manually. MIT has also owned Aegis software for a number of years and has used some of its functionality. They now wish to exploit Aegis’ full potential; they will do so by deploying FactoryLogix to take advantage of its many enhancements and newer technology.
Component traceability detail down to the reference level will be provided, when available, for all serialized products travelling through the system.
The project’s primary goal is to streamline the manual activities, improve the automation of data collection and enhance the accessibility of the data. An internal part number scheme that encompasses many alternatives will be established and managed, while revision control of processes and documentation as well as defect collection will be handled paperlessly. Component traceability detail down to the reference level will be provided, when available, for all serialized products travelling through the system.
Electronic routing will be enforced, including for rework loops, also ensuring that control mechanisms are verifiably enforced. The current paper-based assembly documentation will be replaced by electronic work instructions delivered to the factory floor.
Paste for jobs loaded onto the MY500 printer will be validated as ‘Not Expired’. Loaded material data from the SMT placement equipment will be captured via xLink into the SQL database for lot level traceability.
